Day 1 - Family, Friends, Food, Fun, and Finally...

Day 1- Savage to Madison
286 miles

The one thing we've missed over the years on our Great Adventures, is having the time to stop and visit friends and family. It seems we are always in a hurry to get to the next state, or the next stop, get our picture and move on. This trip was different.

As we start this adventure, we only have eight (8!!) states to go, and they are all within a day's drive of each other in New England. This gave us plenty of time to stop on the way out to the East Coast, in New England and on the way home, to visit people and spend a little extra time seeing things we just want to see.

As we usually do with any of our journeys East, we spent the first night in Madison at my brother's house.

We left, as we usually do, in the late afternoon, right after work. As we road out of town, just past the point where city traffic turns into the wide-open Wisconsin freeway, traffic came to a grinding halt.
Apparently a RV had caught fire about 10 miles ahead of us. We found out later no one was injured, but those 10 miles took us about 2 hours to get through.

By the time we made it to Madison it was very late and very dark. Luckily, my family knows how to ease our tension after a long stressful ride. Adult beverages and snacks were waiting for us when we arrived!
